IndioBravo Film Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in New York City. Our mission is two-fold: 1) to promote Filipino film globally and 2) to enable disadvantaged communities in the Philippines to use film and video for self-expression, self-empowerment and cultural preservation. We want to instill pride in the Philippines' distinct, yet diverse cultural and artistic identity, promoting stories that challenge, illuminate and ultimately enrich the Filipino diaspora and the global filmgoing public.
International film festivals have begun to pay closer attention to Southeast Asia, and in particular to the Philippines, where digital technology has invigorated the film community and given rise to prodigiously talented young artists. The new wave of Philippine cinema, with its emphasis on artistic innovation, social realism and rejection of glossy commercialism, stands in sharp contrast to more mainstream product. However, the accolades and recognition which newer films have attracted at major film festivals, including those at Cannes and Venice, point to their viability globally. The foundation hopes to help filmmakers meet the key challenges of securing distribution and promoting Filipino film around the world.
The Foundation's key activities will include an annual festival of the best new Filipino film, presented in the US and Europe with New York City as the flagship venue. The Foundation will manage international sales of a select film catalog and provide research and consultancy services to filmmakers free of charge. In addition, the Foundation will promote the Philippine film brand at festivals and awards.
The Foundation's other format as a social media network looks to nonprofits like Video Volunteers and FilmAid as models. Our key strategy is to provide video-production training to Community Video Units (CVU) of 6-10 people from impoverished neighborhoods. Every six weeks, these producers, based on a topic chosen by the community, produces a video shown locally via wide-screen projection. About 150-400 people come each night to watch and join in ensuing discussions.
In areas where most cannot read or write, video is a perfect medium for raising awareness about issues like health, human rights, child marriage, water access and poverty, inspiring residents to reflect and effect change through action. Through these initiatives, IndioBravo Film Foundation hopes to catalyze communities to lead, connect and change, improving lives in their own villages and throughout the world.
